Dog owners are being urged to be more responsible and have their pets microchipped.
District of Easington Council will be holding an event offering free chips to residents on Saturday, 21 June at Wheatley Hill Scout Hut, Black Lane between 10am and 2pm.
Once chipped a dog can easily be identified by the council’s environmental wardens. If found straying, then the first time the dog is picked up it will be returned to its owner.
If it is picked up anytime after that the owners will be contacted to inform them of their pet’s whereabouts.
Any stray dogs found in the district are taken to Coxhoe Dogs Home and owners must pay £25 for the return of their dog plus any kennel charges incurred.
Councillor George Patterson, District of Easington Council’s Executive Member for Liveability, said: “Each year the council’s street wardens pick up hundreds of stray dogs off the streets, which can cause a number of problems such as road accidents and dog fouling.
“I would encourage dog owners to take up this free offer and have their pets chipped.”
