An East Durham shopping centre has struck gold with its efforts to be environmentally friendly.

Dalton Park shopping outlet, Murton has been awarded a Tidy Business Standards Gold Award for its work to tackle waste, boost recycling and support the community.

The award was presented by District of Easington Council through its Pride in Easington campaign and is supported by ENCAMS, organisers of the Keep Britain Tidy initiative.

Helen Douglas, Pride in Easington officer, said: “The Tidy Business scheme is all about organisations taking responsibility for their local environment.

“Dalton Park is an excellent example of how a business can not only fulfil its statutory duties but also go that extra mile to make a real difference.”

The shopping centre currently recycles 54 per cent of its waste – a figure bosses are hoping to improve further – and regular litter picks of the site are extended to take in areas beyond its boundaries.

Dalton Park also actively supports a wide range of community projects including the Pride in Easington awards and the Pride family fun day.

Participation in the Tidy Business Standards scheme is free and all organisations that sign up can take advantage of free support, advice and training from the Pride in Easington team.
