Huge cut in domestic greenhouse emissions in County Durham

Energy Managers from all 7 District Local Authorities in County Durham met in Durham City today to announce huge cuts in domestic greenhouse emissions.

The County Durham Energy Partnership (CDEP) – a joint working initiative across all the seven District local Authorities in County Durham – coordinates domestic energy conservation schemes to keep local residents warmer in their homes, to cut fuel poverty levels, reduce winter deaths and lower costly fuel bills.

Since 1997 tens of thousands of homes have been insulated in County Durham giving residents warmer homes and lower fuel bills. As global warming becomes an ever increasing threat to the planet the work of the CDEP has made a significant impact by reducing the domestic greenhouse gas emissions within County Durham by over 2,383,500 tonnes over the past 10 years. That is equivalent to 25,000 times the capacity of Durham Cathedral.

Cliff Duff, Energy Manager at District of Easington Council said: “This is a tremendous contribution in the battle against global warming with real benefits being felt at local level with warmer homes and lower fuel bills for thousands of County Durham residents.”
