Deadline draws nearer for award nominations

Time is running out for nominations for the Pride in Easington Awards 2008.

Organised by District of Easington Council, the awards honour the achievements of individuals and groups across the district who help improve quality of life for themselves and others.

The closing date for entries for this year’s awards is Monday, 31 March – giving residents just a few more days to put forward the names of those they think deserve recognition.

Coun George Patterson, Chairman of the Pride in Easington Steering Group, said: “Last year’s award ceremony may have been our first but we had some extremely worthy winners.

“However, we know there are many more people out there whose hard work and commitment should be celebrated and would, therefore, urge their friends, family and colleagues to let us know who they are.”

Previous award winners included 15-year-old Samantha Corkhill from Seaham, a carer for her mother yet still finds time to support others in a similar position, and Evelyn Robson, who in her position as chair of Wheatley Hill Community Association has helped raise more than £4million in grants for the village’s community centre.

Shotton Partnership was honoured for its tireless work over a number of years to improve the lives of local people, while Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School, Horden, received an award for encouraging pupils to understand and celebrate their neighbourhood and heritage.

This year’s awards will be presented during a ceremony at Shotton Hall Banqueting Suite, on Thursday, 5 June, with honours being handed out in the following eight categories.

· Tidy Ted School Award
· Environmental Award
· Group of the Year
· Youth Group of the Year
· Environmental Business Award
· Volunteer of the Year – over 18
· Pride in Easington Chairman’s Award for Volunteer of the Year – under 18
