Residents urged to have their say on new community centre

People living in Thornley are being asked for their views on a potential new community facility.

District of Easington Council will be calling to every household in the village from Monday, 28 January to Friday, 1 February to collect opinions on replacing Thornley Community Centre.

Residents will be asked about their use of the existing centre, and if a new one should be built, where they think would be best to build it and how it should be run.

Prior to calling at homes, information will also be posted to homes in the area.

Adam White, District of Easington Council’s Community Enterprise Officer, said “Consultants commissioned by the council in 2006 recommended that the current building should be replaced due to its state of repair.

“Since then we have been working with Thornley Regeneration Partnership and residents towards this aim, and are now at the stage where we need to hear what people living in the village really want before making firm plans.”

Once all the information is collated it will be used by New Thornley Partnership to consider the findings and how best to move plans forward.

The existing community centre is owned by District of Easington Council and managed by a volunteer management committee, however, the authority would expect the community to own and manage any new building. Once plans are put forward the council would make a contribution towards building costs.

Residents are reminded that all council workers carry identity badges. If you are unsure whether this is genuine you can call the Personnel Department at District of Easington Council on (0191) 527 0501.
