Booklet encourages young people to be more active

Swimming leaflets

A new leaflet aimed at encouraging more youngsters to take to the water is now available.

The Amateur Swimming Association’s (ASA) Everyday Swim project in Easington has published the booklet in its aim to help tackle childhood obesity.

Everyday Swim looks to bring about a cultural change in the way people view aquatic activities by removing the barriers that can discourage particular social groups from getting active.

The Easington project targets young people and the booklet, which has been circulated to schools around the area, provides information on aquatic activities available at Peterlee Leisure Centre and vouchers for reduced or free swims.

The aim of the booklet is to widen usage of the Leisure Saver card and encourage more young people into the pools.

The leisure centre will be giving these booklets to all those under 25-years old and will also include information on the benefits of swimming, vouchers and a free leisure saver card.

Everyday Swim Coordinator for Easington Duane Newton believes this is a great way to target young people in the area.

“Giving young people in the district the chance to try out a wide range of activities at their local pool gives them the opportunity to find an aquatic activity that they enjoy,” he said.

“With this booklet they can try junior Aquafit, take a friend for free, give water polo a go or even try snorkelling. Swimming isn’t just about going to a pool and swimming a number of lengths to keep fit, it is an enjoyable activity that anyone can get involved in.”

Councillor Joan Freak, District of Easington Council's Executive Member for Social Inclusion and Culture, said: "The booklet is a fantastic new initiative which provides a whole new range of swimming opportunities for young people in East Durham to experience and enjoy."
