Hope, a brown and white collie cross, was found abandoned by a dog warden on Wednesday, 2 January near Fallowfield Farm, South Hetton.
He was taken to Coxhoe Dogs Home, where from this month District of Easington Council will take all strays its wardens pick up.
As the owner has not come forward to collect the puppy within seven days, under the new agreement, it will now be handed over to Northern Stray Aid which will give the dogs it receives a thorough health check, as well as vaccinate, neuter and micro-chip it, before trying to find them a new home.
Ian Hoult, District of Easington Council’s Environmental Enforcement Manager, said: “Each year hundreds of stray dogs are picked up off the streets of East Durham, but unfortunately not all of them are re-united with their owners and some have to be put down.
“We are hoping that under the new partnership with Coxhoe Dog Homes and Northern Stray Aid more abandoned dogs will find new loving homes.”
Pictures and details of all stray dogs found in District of Easington Council are posted on the authority’s website.
